Is it worth charging a plug-in hybrid at home?

Written by Matt Ford · Last updated 8 Nov 2026 · Live figures update from the prices we check

It depends on your electricity price, electric efficiency and petrol-mode mpg. Charging regularly can save money, but an expensive public charger can cost more per mile than petrol.

Compare both fuels

Enter the share of miles you expect to drive electrically, your electric-only miles/kWh, petrol-mode UK mpg and pump price. The calculator adds home charging for electric miles and petrol for the rest. It also compares your regular charging pattern with never plugging in.

Check the tariff accepts your PHEV

Supplier acceptance and smart-charging compatibility are separate. Unknown acceptance is not ranked as eligible; a brand name alone does not confirm a compatible PHEV.

Public charging can cost more

Use your vehicle’s supported charging speed and session size. Compare public electric miles with petrol using checked prices, losses and fees. A displayed saving depends on your entered assumptions, not every journey.

Range alone does not establish how much you drive electrically. Read our formulas and assumptions. DESNZ weekly road fuel prices are an official reference; our calculator does not invent a current national pump price.

This is an estimate. Check final prices with the supplier. We don't cover every tariff.
