Charging an electric car without a driveway

Written by EV Charge Compare · Last reviewed 6 Nov 2026 · Live figures update from the prices we check

Without a driveway you'll mostly use on-street, workplace and public chargers. Slow on-street chargers typically cost about 59.0p per kWh and rapid chargers a figure we don't have enough data for yet, against about 7.9p per kWh on an overnight home EV tariff, so planning where you charge makes a big difference.

Your main options

On-street and lamp-post chargers

Usually the cheapest public option. Ask your council what's planned nearby and whether residents can request a charger.

Workplace charging

If your employer offers chargers, this can be one of the cheapest ways to charge. Ask them how it's treated for tax.

Supermarkets, shops and leisure centres

Handy for topping up while you do something else. Some are cheap or free for customers; check the app and any parking limits.

Rapid and ultra-rapid hubs

Fast, but usually the most expensive per mile. Best for long journeys or when you need a quick charge.

Cables across the pavement

Running a cable across the pavement can be a trip hazard. Many councils don't allow it, or only with an approved cable channel. Check with your council first.
